Eu me abri pra todas as possibilidades e oportunidades positivas que encontrei naquele lugar.
Rafinha fez o show e no final fomos tirar foto com ele.
English version
They say that the first 6 months living in a different place alone is the worst as it is the adjustment period. I won't lie, the first six months were really hard for me. Dealing with homesickness, family, friends, finding myself in a new city, living with a different family from mine and speaking a foreign language every day is stressful. The customs are different, the food, the climate... I tried to distract myself as much as possible. After work I used to go out to any place where I could be alone and away from what was stressing me out. My friend lent me a guitar, since I hadn't brought mine, and that helped me so much that I can't explain it. Only those who love and need music know what I'm talking about.
Something that i kept in my head every day was that I couldn't give up. I got this far and would go all the way back no matter what. That I needed to grow up and deal with my problems on my way, not depend on anyone else, and that was really happening. I opened myself up to all the positive possibilities and opportunities I found there. I listened carefully to the advice that everyone gave me, from where to eat, what to do, how to act and how to deal with my host family It changed me so much that I can now see the difference between Caroline from two years ago and now, a positive difference. I'm much more confident with my decisions. I learned that going to Walmart in pajamas or fancy clothes makes no difference to me, I learned not to be ashamed of speaking wrong English sometimes, if I didn't speak it, I would never learn the right way to speak. I stopped caring about what people thought of me all the time, I realized that everyone has their own little world and their problems and I'm just one more. Obviously I know my value, I know my value to God. I know the value of everyone around me and being "alone" during that time made me rethink many of my attitudes towards myself and the people around me.
Another thing that helped me a lot was saying yes to the invitations that were made to me. For example, go riding a bike, go to the movies, travel to another city at the last minute, go play golf or baseball. For anything that i was invited I would say yes (except for drugs my friends)
It was in one of these that I found myself sitting and talking to the comedian Rafinha Bastos (famous guys in Brazil) about my life.
I don't remember exactly when, but one of those days I met Taylor (not the guitar) and Taylor liked me (after all, who doesn't?) and talking to him I said "Wow, this weekend, a comedian I like a lot is going to be in Houston doing a Stand up Comedy on Saturday night, I wanted to go so much." And that was it, it was just a comment. The next day, Taylor sent me a printscreen of two tickets for Rafinha Bastos' sntandup. I didn't know what to say because I hadn't even planned on it, but I was very happy. I got organized and the following weekend there I was traveling to Houston. We caught the last presentation of the night, there weren't as many people as the first. Out of 30 people who were there, three at most were North Americans. We sat at the first table, in front of the stage. If you've ever been to a standup comedy presentation you probably know that the person closest to the stage will always participate in some part of the show. The first comedian made so much fun of Taylor that i felt sorry for him. I almost didn't understand what he was saying so I laughed and pretended it was all right. Rafinha did the standup comedy and in the end we went to take pictures with him. We talked a little and stuff. Taylor and I became friends with a couple from Dallas and I asked if they'd like to go somewhere for dinner. Rafinha heard the invitation and asked me "are you going somewhere to have dinner?" I said "Yes" and he asked "Can I come along?" I looked at the other Brazilian couple, we laughed and said that for sure.
We went to a restaurant and talked about his life in the United States, he asked about mine and what i was doing there and we talked for hours until it was time to leave. He took a ride with us to the hotel and that was it.
I didn't quite understand how it all happened out of nowhere and so naturally, but it was fun.
It's great to say yes to life's opportunities.
